The Big Read

Be a Rebel with the Alabama Big Read 2010, Featuring The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Click here for link to the NEA Big Read website

The Florence-Lauderdale Public Library invites you to be a rebel at the library this spring.  Beginning March 20, 2010, FLPL will join the public libraries of Alabama to host a statewide Big Read, focusing on Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the story of a young boy who resists the rules and conventions of small-town life.

The Big Read is a community reading program designed by the National Endowment for the Arts to reinstate reading to the center of American culture.  Alabama libraries will support this mission by encouraging patrons to read and discuss Tom Sawyer through programs designed to highlight the exciting nature of great literature.

FLPL will be hosting a variety of events for all ages, including:

    ·   Fence-painting and raft-making for kids
    ·   Antiques appraisal fair
    ·   Cemetery tour
    ·   Readers’ theater performances of Tom Sawyer
    ·   Book Discussions
   ·   Performance of Will Stutts’ Mark Twain’s America

If you or your business is interested in scheduling a book discussion group or sponsoring a set of books in a classroom, email \n events@flpl.org This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call 764-6564, ext. 28.
