OneBook Schedule of Events

Pet Blessing—Saturday, August 23, 11:00 am
At this opening event, sponsored by the Shoals Interfaith Council, adults and children alike are invited to bring their pets to the library to receive blessings from spiritual leaders of the Shoals. Children who do not have pets are encouraged to bring stuffed animals to be blessed. All pets must be on a leash, in a carrier or cage, or carried by their owner.

Doggy Double Feature of My Dog Skip and A Dog of Flanders—Saturday, August 23, 12:00 pm
Our opening event continues with this Doggy Double Feature. This free film screening will be held in the library’s conference room and is part of our “Dog Days of Summer: Canine Classics” film series.

Friends of the Library Bookstore Sale—Saturday, August 23, through Wednesday, August 27
During this sale, all items in the bookstore will be half price, so stop by to find the bestsellers and classics that you love—and maybe a few surprises. The Friends of the Library Bookstore is located in the gallery area of the library.

Dog Wash Day—Saturday, August 30, 10:00 am-2:00 pm
After a summer of playing and exploring, your dog will probably be ready for a bath. Just bring your dog to the library, and PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) of the Shoals will have your pet clean and ready for the fall. This event is cosponsored by Pet Depot and Petco.

Dog Food for Fines Week—Monday, September 8, though Sunday, September 14
Have a fine on your library account? Just bring in a bag of dry dog food, and for each pound of dog food we will cancel out up to $2 in fines. Please do not bring bags larger than 5 pounds. All dog food will be donated to the City of Florence Animal Control.

Alabama War Dog Program—Sunday, September 14, 3:00 pm
Veteran Wade Franks will discuss his time in Vietnam with his military dog Little Joe and talk about the proposed Alabama War Dog Memorial, which will feature Franks and Little Joe.

Amadeus the Traveling Dog—Tuesday, September 23, 10:30 am
Therapy dog Amadeus, who has been featured on PBS and has his own line of children’s books and toys, will visit the library to teach children how to safely approach and pet dogs.

Adoption Day—Saturday, September 27, 12:00-4:00pm
Looking for a new pet? Just stop by the library for PAWS’ monthly Adoption Day.

“Dog Days of Summer: Canine Classics”: Because of Winn-Dixie—Saturday, September 27, 2:00 pm
Stop by the library to enjoy this modern canine classic. This free film screening will be held in the library conference room and will conclude our “Dog Days of Summer” film series.

Visit from Richard Cowdrey, illustrator of Bad Dog, Marley!

The OneBook program will conclude with a visit from Richard Cowdrey, whose illustrations have been featured in many youth books, including Bad Dog, Marley! The library will be displaying samples of Cowdrey’s art, and Cowdrey will present programs to share his artwork and talk about his job as a children’s book illustrator.
